There is nothing better than having a luscious lawn that makes any visitor. Imagine if you could have a lawn that is weed and pest free and stays the same shade of deep green all year round.
Well you can in this article I will be taking you through how often should you fertilize your lawn in order to achieve these results. On top of that I will be relying on my years of experience in lawn care to explain the 5 biggest mistakes to avoid.
Choosing the Right Fertiliser
The first thing you need to do if you want to fertilise your lawn is choosing the right fertiliser.
There is very little point in fertilising your lawn at the right time if you are using unsafe or poor quality fertiliser. So for this reason read our article on the best lawn fertilisers to see which ones are best.
How Often to Fertilize lawn for best Results
The answer to this question is really dependent on the season and where you live. The following timeframe is for anyone who lives in a place with four seasons ie a non tropical place.
Spring
Spring is my favourites season of the year as everything is coming back to life, including your grass. After a winter were your grass lays dormant it is ready to start growing again which means it is hungry for fertiliser. For this reason make sure to fertilize every week or two to ensure you get that perfect lawn.
“In spring fertilising every 1-2 weeks is best“
Summer
Summer is the period where your grass is luscious green and growing rapidly for this reason it needs enough fertiliser in order to deliver the best possible results. The ground is however very nutrient dense from the springs fertilisation so for this reason I would recommend fertilisation just once a month.
“In Summer fertilizing every 4 weeks is best“
Autumn/fall
What ever you call this period of the year it is the point where everything starts to get colder. This means that your grass will start to grow slower and if you don’t take care of it will look unhealthy and all your previous work will be for nothing.
Because the grass is growing slower and the combination of leaves on the ground and fertiliser could encourage fungal growth I recommend that you fertilize just once every 8 weeks.

Winter
Winter is always cold and the grass might even be covered in frost or snow during this time so for this reason I would recommend that you don’t fertilise it at all. Doing so will not aid the grasses growth but will just feed the pests and fungi living in your garden.

How to fertilise your Lawn
I will soon publish a whole article on how to your lawn but here I will give a vague overview of the method that I prefer most.
Instead of spending hundreds of pounds on a sprinkler system I just fill a watering can up to the top and mix in my chosen fertiliser.
Then I go and evenly spread it across the lawn. It is really that easy.
Top Mistakes to avoid
Over Fertilization
Not only does adding too much fertilizer or doing it too often waste your money but it can completely ruin your lawn and the surrounding environment.
When you add to much all it does it sit there in the soil and provides the perfect breeding ground for mushrooms and even algae to grow and ruin your lovely lawn.
That is not mentioning the fact that fertiliser is expensive so adding too much of it is just wastefull.
Thinking Fertilization is the only thing that matters
I admit that I have been guilty of this in the past but I just want to make clear that fertilization is not the only thing that matter when it comes to having the perfect lawn. There are countless other things that go into into getting the best results.
Using Bad fertilizer
If you have kids that play in your garden this point is especially important. Some fetilizers have some dangerous ingredients could harm the people that use your lawn which is not good for anyone so before you decide on a fertiliser ensure you do your research.

To conclude I think that fertilizing your lawn is an easy way to make sure that your lawn looks great but doing it correctly and at the right time is crucial for your success. The fertilization intervals that I have recommended are based off of my own trial and error but you might want to do your own trial and error to find what works.
